Agartala, May 14 (FD) Students of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Wednesday staged a road blockade in front of Bhawans’ Tripura Vidya Bhawan at Narsingarh, protesting the alleged inaction of the school authorities in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a girl student by a teacher.
The protestors, led by ABVP activists and joined by a large number of students, demanded the immediate arrest of the accused teacher, identified as Chandrajit Roy, and stringent punishment against him.
According to sources, the accused teacher had allegedly been sexually exploiting the girl student for a prolonged period under the pretext of providing private tuition. The victim was allegedly threatened with serious consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
The matter reportedly came to light after the girl’s health deteriorated due to sustained mental trauma. Following repeated questioning by her parents, the student allegedly narrated the entire incident.
Sources further alleged that when the victim’s guardians and several students approached school principal Swapna Dasgupta regarding the matter, the administration initially attempted to suppress the issue by making assurances of action. Protestors also alleged that the principal, along with certain members of the school managing committee, later helped the accused teacher flee from the school premises.
Enraged over the alleged inaction, ABVP activists and students launched a road blockade in front of the school, disrupting vehicular movement for a considerable period. Traffic on both sides of the road came to a standstill as a large number of vehicles remained stranded.
Later, personnel from Tripura Police reached the spot and held discussions with the protestors, urging them to withdraw the blockade. Police officials assured the demonstrators that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.
According to police sources, officers handling the case would question the school principal and members of the managing committee before launching a manhunt to arrest the accused teacher. FD JK
