Agartala, May 5 (FD) A thirty eight year old Laxmi Das, who gave birth of her fourth number of baby in a local hospital at Simna in Mohanpur sub-division of West Tripura district, sold her baby girl to a childless couple due to abject poverty.
Her husband, Prasenjit Das (40), a day labourer by profession from Katacherra village is suffering from tuberculosis due to malnutrition and also not in a position to run his family.
An unidentified couple from Khowai had taken over the girl child without any valid document and left the place.
However, the incident created furor in the area and the child line authority received the information and reached to her to know how she could sell her new born baby without signing any paper and without informing the government.
Laxmi denied selling her baby and stated that she had given her to a childless couple whom she does not know.
However, Prasenjit’s mother Basana Das (61) told the child line people that the couple had given her all expanses in the hospital including the medicines and the couple had taken her away.
Then police swung into operation and could manage to recover the child, who is now in a government home.
Now, if the guardians of the baby did not want to maintain the newborn the Child line authorities would adopt her in a formal procedure. FD JK
