Agartala, July 18 (FD) An 80-year-old man was subjected to mob violence and public humiliation in Tripura's Gomati district on Friday after being accused of repeatedly raping his daughter-in-law, police said.
The vigilante attack occurred hours after the accused man's son allegedly died by suicide, hanging himself from the ceiling of their residence. Holding the octogenarian responsible for the tragedy, an angry mob beat the elderly man, paraded him through the village wearing a garland of shoes, and tied him to a pole. Videos of the incident have since circulated widely on social media.
According to Bikram Debbarma, the Officer-in-Charge of Nutanbazar Police Station, local residents submitted a signed memorandum to the police claiming the father-in-law had sexually assaulted the woman for months, ultimately driving his son to end his life.
Police personnel intervened at the village, rescued the man from the crowd, and transported him to a local hospital for medical treatment.
While villagers have demanded strict legal action against the octogenarian, police noted that no official complaint has been filed yet. "Legal action will be initiated in accordance with the law once a formal complaint is lodged," a police spokesperson said. Investigations into the alleged sexual assault and the subsequent suicide are currently on-going. FD JK
