Agartala, Sep 23 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday informed the Assembly that 3,518 foreign nationals, mostly Bangladeshi citizens, have been arrested in the state since 2022 for entering into the state without valid documents.
Responding to a calling attention notice raised by Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma, the Chief Minister said his government is working in coordination with the Centre to curb infiltration from across the border.
“Special task forces (STFs) have been formedin all eight districts to stop infiltration. The STFs are also assigned with the tasks of keeping strict vigil on terrorist activities, drug smuggling, fundamentalist groups and cross-border crimes,” Saha said.
He added that a state-level task force, headed by a Superintendent of Police (SP)-rank officer, has been formed to monitor border-related crimes.
According to official data presented by the CM, 965 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in 2022, 1,014 in 2023, 947 in 2024, and 390 up to August 31 this year. Of the total arrests, 2,739 individuals have already been sent back to their country. This includes 894 deportations in 2022, 696 in 2023, 676 in 2024, and 441 up to August 2025.
Saha further admitted that fencing along certain stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura remains incomplete due to various constraints.
“The state will not compromise on infiltration. We are also keeping a close watch on the use of fake documents and taking necessary steps to curb the menace,” the Chief Minister asserted. FD JK
