Agartala, Dec 16 (FD) Vijay Diwas or Victory Day is commemorated on December 16, marking the end of the 1971 Indo-Pak War and the liberation of Bangladesh. India declared victory on this day 51 years ago after Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender.
To commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who participated in the 1971 War, a somber Vijay Diwas function was observed at Albert Ekka War Memorial park at Lichu Bagan here by Red Shield Gunners today.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in presence of other dignitaries offered floral tribute to the Martyr Albert Ekka and remembered the brave soldiers including the brave martyr Lance Naik Albert Ekka of Indian Army who sacrificed their lives while saving Agartala city from Pakistani invasion during Indo-Pak War of 1971.
Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, High Ranking Officers of Indian Army, Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh, stationed here Arif Mohammad and others were present in the programme.
Addressing the programme, Dr Saha remembered the brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect the country.
Dr Saha also shared his memories of the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
He said that was the period of creating a new history.
History was written with the collective effort of the Indian army and Mukti Bahini,” Dr Saha said.
He also shared the experience of watching the long march of 93 thousand Pakistani army personnel who were being taken to Agartala through Akhaura border after surrendering to the Indian army.
Dr Saha with the birth of Bangladesh after defeating Pak army was also a victory for us as well.
The Chief Minister also shared his memories of visiting Dhaka and other parts of the newly born Bangladesh (51 years ago).
He said that he is hopeful that the friendly relationship with Bangladesh will be strengthened further in future.
Besides, as part of the celebration, 21 Sector Assam Rifles has organized a bike rally to commemorate Vijay Diwas which started from Kailashahar via Radhanagar will be flagged in at Agartala at 3:30 p.m on Saturday at Umakanta stadium.
Earlier in the morning, Bangladesh Assistant High Commission celebrated the Vijay Diwas here with due dignity.
As part of the celebration the Assistant High Commissioner hoisted the national flag of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
Addressing the programme, the Assistant High Commissioner greeted the people of Tripura on the occasion.
Tripura assembly speaker Ratan Chakraborty and Minister of state for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik visited the program. FD PD JK
