Agartala, Apr 28 (FD) Widespread storms, heavy rainfall and intense thunderstorms have left a trail of destruction across Tripura over the past two days, damaging at least 1,534 houses, injuring two persons and disrupting road connectivity in several districts, officials said on Tuesday.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, no fatalities have been reported so far. However, 129 electric poles were damaged, leading to power disruptions in multiple areas, while fallen trees blocked key roads, hampering movement before clearance operations were undertaken.
Unakoti district emerged as the worst-affected, with 518 houses damaged in Kailashahar subdivision alone, including 26 that were completely destroyed. In North Tripura, 136 houses were damaged in Dharmanagar subdivision.
Dhalai district reported 23 damaged houses in Ambassa, while Kamalpur and Gandatwisa subdivisions recorded 97 houses each. Longtharai Valley subdivision reported 55 affected houses, including 20 fully destroyed.
In Sepahijala district, 61 houses were damaged in Bishalgarh, 91 in Sonamura and 98 in Jampuijala, with authorities continuing road clearance efforts. West Tripura’s Sadar subdivision witnessed 28 road blockages, all of which have since been cleared, while Mohanpur reported 37 damaged houses.
Khowai district recorded 41 damaged houses in Teliamura and 44 in Khowai subdivision. In Gomati district, several areas reported road blockages, while two persons sustained injuries in Kakraban amid damage to power infrastructure.
South Tripura reported 59 partially damaged houses in Sabroom and 177 in Belonia, including 27 that were completely destroyed.
Officials said damage assessment is going on, with financial assistance already initiated in some affected areas. While river levels largely remained below danger marks, the Juri river was reported to be flowing slightly above the expected level.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said the government is working on a “war footing” to tackle the crisis. “District administrations are taking all necessary measures. The government is committed to providing all possible assistance to affected families,” he said.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Khowai and West Tripura districts for April 28–29, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, winds reaching up to 80 kmph, and heavy to very heavy rainfall. Orange alerts remain in place for other districts, with authorities urging residents to stay alert and avoid non-essential travel as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist. FD JK
